II.
Understanding the TOEFL question:
There are different types of
TOEFL questions. You never know which
question you will receive, so you must be prepared to write on ALL the types of
questions. It is very important that you
completely understand the question BEFORE you begin to write. Below are some different essay question
types.
1.
Choose a point of view and support that view.
Example: Some people believe that university students
should be required to attend classes.
Others believe that going to classes should be optional for
students. Which point of view do you
agree with? Use specific reasons and
details to explain your answer.
This type of question asks
you to look at only ONE side of the issue…the side you agree with. DON’T write about both sides. You tell which side you agree with and
support your ideas with details and examples.
2.
Describe something.
Example: If you could invent something NEW, what
product would you develop? Use specific
details to explain why this invention is needed?
In
answering this type of question, you MUST be creative. It asks you to describe something NEW,
something that does not exist. You must
describe it in detail AND tell why it is necessary.
3. Compare two points of view and tell which one
you agree with.
Example: Some people think that children should begin
their formal education at a very early age and should spend most of their time
on school studies. Others believe that
young children should spend most of their time playing. Compare these two views. Which view do you agree with? Why?
In
this type of question, you must write about BOTH sides of this issue and then
tell which side you agree with. You may
NOT say that you agree with both sides.
You MUST make a choice. First,
give support, details and examples of both sides of the issue. Then, tell which side you agree with and
why.
4. Agree or disagree with something.
Example: Do you agree or disagree with the following
statement: ONLY people who earn a lot of
money are successful. Do you agree or
disagree with this definition of success?
Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
In
this type of question, you MUST agree or disagree. You cannot be unsure or indecisive. After you have said whether you agree or
disagree, you must give convincing reasons and examples for your choice.
5. Explain why something is true.
Example: People remember special gifts or presents
that they have received. Why? Give specific reasons and examples to support
your answer.
In
this question, you should use lots of examples. (For this question, you would
use examples of gifts one might receive and tell why those gifts are
memorable). Do not write in the first
person, “I.” Write in more general
terms.
6. Support an idea or plan.
Example: It has recently been announced that a new
restaurant may be built in your neighborhood.
Do you support or oppose this plan?
Why? Use specific reasons and
details to support your answer.
In
this question, first tell whether you support or oppose the plan and then tell
why. Since this question is somewhat
personal, it is ok to use personal pronouns such as: “I, me, my” in your
answer.
III.
The parts of an essay:
In every essay, there should
be an introduction, a body and conclusion.
A.
The introduction:
The introduction restates
the question using different vocabulary and/or sentence structure. The introduction also includes your thesis
statement…the most important sentence in your essay.
B.
The body:
The body of your essay is
also the “heart” of your essay. It will
include your main ideas and details and examples to support those ideas. Each new idea should be a new paragraph. Typically, a TOEFL essay will have 3 – 4 body
paragraphs.
C.
The conclusion:
The conclusion will be
your final paragraph. It will summarize
all the main ideas in your essay and it may also include your opinion.
IV.
How to write a good introduction:
Let’s look at some more essay
questions to see how to restate the question and how to write your thesis
statement.
TOEFL essay question #1:
Some people prefer to eat
at food stands or restaurants. Other
people prefer to prepare and eat food at home.
Which do you prefer? Use specific
reasons and examples to support your answer.
Restatement & Thesis:
People have two options
when deciding where to eat. They can
prepare meals and eat at home or they can go out to stands or restaurants. I prefer to go out to eat because the food is
more varied and interesting, it is less work for me and it saves time.
Analysis:
The restatement mentions
the two types of options people have for eating and tells which one the author
prefers. In addition, it gives three
reasons for that preference. These three
reasons will make up the three main idea paragraphs in the body of the essay.
TOEFL essay question #2:
Is it better for children
to participate in team sports or individual sports? Why?
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Restatement & Thesis:
It
is better for children to participate in team sports rather than individual
sports. In team sports, children learn
how to cooperate. They learn good
sportsmanship and how to rely on their teammates. These are important lessons that will benefit
children throughout their lives.
Analysis:
The first sentence clearly
states the author’s opinion. This is
followed by three reasons for the opinion.
Finally, the author mentions life lessons. In the essay, the three reasons will make up
the three main idea paragraphs in the body of the essay. In addition, the author will mention how each
main idea is useful throughout life.
TOEFL essay question #3:
Some people prefer to live
in a small town. Others prefer to live
in a big city. Which place would you
prefer to live in? Use specific reasons
and details to support your answer.
Restatement & Thesis:
There are many good
reasons to live in a big city and an equal number of good reasons to live in a
small town. I, myself, prefer to live in
a small town because it is more personal and homey; it is easier to get around
in and it is safer than a big city.
Analysis:
The first statement says
that both a city and town have positive aspects. The next sentence tells the author’s
preference and reasons for that preference.
These reasons will make up the body of the essay.
V. How to write good body paragraphs:
Each paragraph in your essay
introduces a new idea. It should include
a thesis statement followed by support and examples. Be sure to use LOTS of examples. Within and between paragraphs be sure to use
transition words like: on the other
hand, however, though, for example, in contrast, likewise, in addition, first,
finally. The paragraph should end with a
concluding sentence which briefly summarizes the ideas in the paragraph.
VI. The elements of a good concluding paragraph:
A good concluding paragraph
should include a summary of your main points.
It may also include the author’s opinion. It should NOT introduce any new ideas. A good concluding paragraph often leaves an
impression on the reader. It may make
the reader think more deeply about the topic.
VII. Preparing to write and writing your answer:
I.
Read and
understand the essay question. (2 minutes).
II. Organize your ideas on paper by writing
a short outline of the introduction, body and conclusion. (8 minutes).
III. Write
your essay. Remember to restate the
question in your introduction. Use clear
details and LOTS of examples in the body of your essay. Finally, summarize the main ideas in the
concluding paragraph of your essay. (15 minutes).
I.
Reread your essay
and make any changes in spelling, verb tense, word choice or sentence
structure. (5 minutes).

IX. A sample TOEFL essay (based on the outline
above)
It is a good idea for teenagers
to have jobs while they are students because they can learn about
responsibility; they can learn the value of money and they can learn how to
work as a member of a team.
When teenagers have jobs while
they are students, they can learn how to be responsible. As an employee, you must follow a weekly
schedule. This means, you have to come
to work on time. If you are scheduled to
begin work at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning, you have to be there at 8 a.m. It doesn’t matter if you went to a party the
night before and do not want to get up.
You have to get up. Your boss is
relying on you to do your job. As an
employee, you also learn that you must serve the customer in a friendly
manner. If you are not friendly, the
store may lose business and you may lose your job. Finally, an employee is responsible for
maintaining the store shelves with inventory.
If you work in a department store, you have to keep the shelves filled
with merchandise. The products have to
be priced and placed on the shelves. If
the shelves look empty, customers may get a bad impression of the store and may
not continue to shop there. It is good
for students to learn responsibility when they are young because it will
benefit them as they get older.
Another benefit to teenagers
working is that they will learn the value of money. Often students get money from their parents,
but they do not realize how hard their parents work for that money. When students work, they begin to appreciate
how difficult it can be to make money.
They also realize that “money doesn’t grow on trees” as some students
seem to believe when asking their parents for money. Another reason it is good for students to
work is that they will make wiser choices when they use their own money to buy
things. For example, if students work 20
hours per week at $7.00 per hour, they will make $140 per week. In one month, that is about $540. Perhaps a student will think twice about
spending $120 for a pair of tennis shoes or $350 for a stereo system when s/he
has had to work very hard for that money.
On the other hand, when students do spend money for personal objects,
they will appreciate them more than if they had gotten the money from their
parents.
Finally, working teenagers learn
from being members of a team. As employees,
students learn to work with others and help one another. For example, if someone is sick, you may be
asked to help out. In addition, other
employees will depend on you to do your share of the work. If one person does not do his/her job, other
employees may have to do extra work to compensate. Students will learn very quickly that it is
not good teamwork to expect others to do your work. Finally, students will develop friendships
with other employees because they have learned to count on each other. Working as a member of a team will build
strong character in students.
To
conclude, it is a valuable experience for teenagers to have jobs while they are
students because they will learn to be responsible adults. They will have an appreciation for money and
they will learn about working with others.
These experiences will help them grow into adulthood and benefit them
throughout their lives.

HOW AIRPLANES CAN CHANGE PEOPLE’S LIVES.
I believe that airplanes change people’s lives in so many different ways, the terrorist attack that United States suffered from al-qaeda has changed millions of peoples lives, airplanes are using also to bring help to our tropes that are in the war, consequently bringing hope to thousands of families. The airplanes are a great way of communication by bringing mail and news to people that are apart and by bringing people together, it is also a way to get away and to go away, for example go to a vacation.
First of all, the terrorist attack by al-qaeda that happened on September 11, 2001 has changed millions of people’s lives. People that used to fly every day to work, to business, to go to the other cities or states, became afraid to do so after the attack had happen.
Thousands of New York families felt obligated to move out of they homes because they wore leaving right on the airplane traffic area, they couldn’t coup with the high probability of a new attack could happen at any time, uncountable families lost they love ones on that day which has change they lives forever , in fact after the September 11 attack the al-qaeda attempted many other attack to the United States, people became afraid to fly.
Secondly, because of the airplanes we are able to help our tropes in Iraq and Afghanistan, bringing food, medical needs, armaments, news from the world and they love ones, and lots of hope for thousands of families.
Third, airplanes change people’s lives by bringing mails and packages to people that are apart in the other city state or country. Milions of families that only cominicates by mail depends on airplane to have news from they love ones.
Finally airplanes change people’s lives in the way that they can go back- and -forth to different places, to meet different people, from different ethnics, different backgrounds, different ways to see and live life. In your opinion, what does success come from (Careful planning or taking risks or chances)?
From my point of view, these two issues are not completely separate. Careful planning makes our path to the success more known, faster and without a lot of dangers while taking risks and chances thrust us toward a goal more significantly; nevertheless, in some cases, it has its own drawbacks. One who takes chances in his life will think about it and does not behave impulsively.
To have an easier path to success, one should manage his tasks and put them in a logical queue. When you plan a job, you exactly know what the steps are and what level of priority they have. The reading claims that edmontosours had to migrate in order to survive in winter and provides three reasons of suporting which the professor refutes each of and contradicts the reading.
First, the reading prosits that the build-in urge for food forced edmontosours to migrate to south. However the professor claims that in polar reagon in summer the day's long is about 24 hours and as in past the climate was warmer there this reagon had the capability to grow a lot vegatation. 6 month sunlight provide enourmous amount of food and although this vegatation died in winter, the dead vegatation serve as a food supply for edmontosours during summer. So it contradicts the argument that edmontosours had to migrate.
Second, the reading says that living in herd is a proof for this hypothesis. However, again, professor refutes it by pointing out that there are some species like rosevelt elk which live in herds but don't migarate. Another reason for living in herds is that it provides kind of protection from predators and this extera protection might play integral role to attract edmontosours to live in herds instead of being a proof for migration.
Third, although reading points out that these strange creatures had the capabality to migrate long distances, the juvaniles couldn't migrate like adults. And because adults couldn't leave juvaniles behind they couldn't migrate. juvaniles couldn't survive by their own and they slowed the edmontosours speed.

It is more important to keep your old friends than it is to make new friends.
Although some people believe that to keep old friends is more important than to make new friends, but it seems to me, it is not a good strategy for a social person. This idea doesn't suit for a person who lives in a society and gets along with other people.
As you know everyone experiences several periods in his life, also every period has its own problems and intellectuality ; in during of every step of your life, you'll meet new faces and characters, so your options in choosing friends depend on your intellectually that is so varied.
In our childhood, we had certain close friends; we enjoyed to spend our times with them, we used to share toys with together and experience the same works and plays; gradually we got old and passed period after another; the faces in our life changed and we got familiar with new faces and new ideas. As you know, naturally the mankind is curious so he prefers to challenge with something new; getting along with new people and different ideology is one of these challenges; he starts to make new friends and they can change the line of his thought and his ideology about life; This alteration would be risky but on the other word, life's nature is own risky too, the point is, you have to choose; in fact, these choices make the human's life.
I have so many friends that I chose them in different eras and different situation. One of my best friends comes from my childhood; we have the same memories about those years; we used to play games and so on. I got familiar with new people at university and dormitory; of course the type of events and experiences is so different from period to period and person to person. But I think my friends have had the important role in my life.
To sum up, to put the issues into a nutshell, making new friends in every body's life is as important as keeping old friends that you've had.

Young people enjoy life more than older people do
Young people enjoy life more than older people do
Some people may think that older people enjoy life more than young people do. However in my opinion, young people enjoy life more than older people do. Young people' passion and energy are enough to enjoy life more than older people do.
First of all, young people do not have much responsibility compare to older people. For example, older people have responsibility to take care of their children, to earn money, to complete their work, etc. These responsibilities make them limited to enjoy their life. Moreover, whenever they try to do something to enjoy life they prefer their children's favor first, like to travel where, to choose which movie, to come together with my childrens' friends and their mother. These all make the life less enjoyable thing. On the other hand, young people do not have these responsibilities, they are free too choose from variety of options to do for enjoying their life. They can meet with their own friend, they can go most recent and famous movie. These show us, young people enjoy their life more than older people do.
Additionally, young people have more energy to do anything. In contrast, older people usually suffer from some disabilities by the time is passing. For example, my sister and I live in USA and usually we try to come together whenever we find some free time. And every time we go different places, and try new things. However, this spring break we want our mom to join us. Unfortunately, she has some knees problem even she is just 45 years old. Which forces our decision for changing according to my mom's situation. We had great time, and enjoyed of course.
However, my mom was sorry to not be able to do everything that she used to do it before. Hence, we see that by the time our enjoying life terms will change up to our ages. And we think that we should go, try and see as much as we can do while we are still young, otherwise we will not be in proper health condition to do whatever we want.
Lastly, young people enjoy life more than older people because of they can easily follow the technology compare to the older people. And technology is one of the most enjoyful thing in our life. For example, we are using social media, kind of application to be more connected to our friends. And the more connection creates more friendship. And the more friendship means more enjoyable life. However, older people can only connect with their friend with traditional method which is only couple friends. As a result of this young people can more enjoy life than older people.
To sum up, there is a huge difference between young and older people to enjoy their life. Of course, the older people can also enjoy their life according to their new age. However in some point, they feel they are not able to do everything they want, and in this manner they feel little boundary surrounding them. They might not feel fully enjoyed life like in their young age. On the other hand, young people can able to enjoy life by being less responsible, more energetic and more following up new things.

Some young adults want independence from their parents as soon as possible. Other young adults prefer to live with their families for a longer time. Which of these situations do you think is better?
In general, children always live with their parents. However, when they grow up as young adults, some of them want to be independent and leave their parents. In my view, it is better that young adults live with their families for a longer time.
Parents always love and care their children. They will be happier to have their children live with them. Living together also let parents know their children problems. Parents have passed more experience than their children so they can help their children solve those problems. From parents’ view, whether children grow up to be young adults or even adults, they are always just little children. In addition, the more children grow up, the older their parents become. It would be better that they stay with their parents and take care of them. Parents can feel happier and warmer to have their children around them, which results in their healthy minds and bodies. In my country, we always live with our parents. Even when we get married, we are all still live together within the same house. Parents always advise us on many difficulties we meet such as choosing a job, working with people and keeping relationships. They also always prepare delicate dinner for us as they know we will be so tired after work. On weekends, we may take them out or stay home with them to have a nice time together.
On the other hand, if young adults leave their families for their independence, they may face many problems. They have to find another place to live. They need to find more money to earn their living. This is quite hard for them as they are just young adults. They will not have much income. In addition, they can easily make some mistakes. Young adults who need independence tend to have high self-confidence. They appear to make a decision on their own without any advice from others, which sometimes is not a prudent decision.
Living together with a family benefits every family member. I strongly recommend everyone to live with their family as long as possible so they will have much more precious time together with their family.
In general, children always live with their parents. However, when they grow up as young adults, some of them want to be independent and leave their parents. In my view, it is better that young adults live with their families for a longer time.
